LANDSCAPE DESIGN

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Kingsway Residence
2020

Aaron Szuck, our Operations Manager and head designer, received the Manitoba Nursery Landscape Association 2020 Award of Excellence for Landscape Design.

This Crescentwood home underwent extensive renovations that bridged traditional and modern aspects. The challenge was to create a design that maintained the historic architecture of the neighbourhood while reflecting the client’s lifestyle.

The front yard has a traditional feel with large perimeter planting beds filled with trees, shrubs and perennials. The use of fieldstone, wood mulch, and regionally inspired plant material are complimented by more contemporary elements like rectangular slabs, landscape lighting and an accent planter that mirrors the house’s interior design.

In the backyard, clean lines of the interior continue into the outdoor living space of the deck and pool area. Large wooden horizontal privacy panels, plant groupings, and architectural grasses in linear planting beds create an intimate modern space. Meandering stepping stones connect the backyard to the front yard through the side gate.

The landscape is smart home integrated with Hunter Irrigation Hydrawise control and FX Luminaire landscape lights which can be controlled by the client on demand.

COUNTRY CLUB
2022

Located at the entrance of St. Charles Country Club in sunny St. James, this upscale condo complex boasts greenspace on all sides. When turning off Country Club Blvd you are greeted with a perennial bed featuring tall grasses, fieldstone boulders and a variety of shrubs and trees. Lining one side of the circular driveway is a row of Mountain Ash providing a background for the grouping of spruce trees and native grasses in the island bed.

On either side of the main entrance, annual beds bring colour and texture while mature columnar cedars complement the red brick façade. Spruce trees line one side of the property providing privacy for balconies overlooking the rolling lawn. This lawn area is bordered by lilacs, spirea, elder and a mature Linden tree. The rest of the balconies view the golf course with two mature Silver Maples in the foreground and a stand of Pillar Birch.

We have been maintaining and nurturing this shared greenspace since 2013.

Instead of chemical-based deer repellants, motion-activated sprinklers are utilized. Bio-herbicides are used instead of harmful chemicals. We apply soil conditioners to improve soil fertility and microbial activity. Grass clippings are mulched to reduce the need for fertilizer. To reduce inputs/labour, wood mulch is spread in most planting beds. A traditional irrigation controller was upgraded to a smart Hunter Hydrawise controller that adapts the irrigation schedule in real time.
